The Early Days
Simon's first images using the etching medium were monochrome, and made use of line work with tonal aquatints. After leaving college he began experimenting with two plate works in color, separating the line work onto one plate with a color aquatint on the second plate. This style can be seen in prints such as Spreading Beeches . He then developed his technique by working with three plate color aquatints using the sugar lift process. The high point of this period was reached with his Mediterranean series of sunlit doorways and windows.
His style had progressed from monochrome to full color and he had taken traditional methods to the limit, it was in the early years of the 1990's that his experiments led him to develop his unique signature style of 'monotype etching' which enabled him to break out into a far richer expression than had been previously possible
