Trained in the art of printmaking for four years, Simon Bull has gone on to discover new and exciting ways of expressing his personal artistic vision through this powerful medium. The etchings, which have become his signature works, were developed over a period of years and combine his love of watercolor, traditional etching and aquatint techniques. Together with a joyous expression of form, he fuses all of these elements into a celebration, not just of color, but into a celebration of life.
One of our printers prepares to print a new etching plate.
An even layer of ink is applied with a roller.
The plate is polished with a course cloth, known as scrim. Scrim removes
the ink from the surface only, leaving the majority of the ink trapped in the etched areas.
After the plate has been wiped with scrim, it is hand-cleaned with a rag to bring out the detail.
The plate is then laid on the bed of the press.
The paper required
for printing etchings is traditionally made from
100% cotton rag. In order
to ensure the best transfer
of ink to paper while under the pressure of the rollers
